The Magic Doorway

Only moments ago, Jeremy and the rest of the boys jumped off the cliff into the ocean. Now the boys waited for Adam, circling like sharks. They knew he would be too chicken to jump, and they tormented him with delight.

From where Adam stood the water’s refreshing emerald blue quality looked inviting, just not inviting enough. He backed away from the drop and out of the view of the boys. “If I don’t do this they will never let me live it down,” Adam thought.

As if on cue, a fat walrus boy yelled out “You Suck!” Adam clenched his jaw and felt his face burn red. Turning around swiftly he took a running start and leapt off the cliff. The boys cheered as Adam flipped like a coin down toward the water.

Adam felt his feet touch the smooth rocks of the ocean floor. “Holy Shit, I did it!” He spun in a circle, quickly scanning the murky blue underworld till he located the paddling legs of the boys only ten feet away.

Just then, a torpedo of hair, flesh and scales swooshed passed. Adam’s heart raced like a speedboat, making it nearly impossible to hold his breath. Bracing himself he turned around and watched a Mermaid enter a small rickety wooden door in the ocean floor.

Adam let out a bubble of air, and frantically swam to the opening. He grabbed the rusted door handle, and gave it a tug. The door opened to a dark underwater cavern. The only light that pierced the blackness came from a crack in the rocks. Slowly turning his head he scanned the cave letting his eyes adjusted to the darkness, until he spotted the mermaid curled up in a corner eagerly feasting. As he swam closer, the Mermaid quickly turned to face Adam holding the severed head of a scuba diver.

When Adam did not resurface the boys started to panic, Jeremy was the first to call the police. The boys, wrapped in the brown and scratchy police blankets, watched from the cliffs as the boats searched for the body. It was not until the next day that they found Adam’s body washed ashore a mile away, the Coast Guard determined he was mauled by a shark.
